The Kalbelia community is found in Rajasthan and Gujarat in North West India. It is known for its vibrant culture and unique artistic expression. The w omen are renowned for their dancing and their skill in creating intricate quilts and soft furnishings that combine the techniques of applique, quilting and embroidery and incorporate traditional motifs based on the natural world. As the Kalbelia nomadic lifestyle as snake charmers, snake rescuers and entertainers is no longer viable there is a crisis in the community. Being landless, many women were reduced to begging in cities and migrating for agricultural and industrial work thereby depriving their children of education.
The Kalbelia Craft Revival Project was started by three people in 2020 Covid time.
1. Dr Madan Meena whos is director of Adivasi Kal academy
2. Geetanjali Gondhale of Moha Silver Jewellery who raised the funding in start
3. Victoria Singh of Kota Heritage Society who looked after all logistics and on ground work with artisans.
The aim was to enable women to earn a dignified living through their neglected craft skills. By earning while staying at home the women are able to send their children to school giving hope to the next generation.
